Ralox and Verde, the Wandering Grove

Post by Corvid on Mon Jul 17, 2017 10:45 am

The Basics:
Character Name: Ralox and Verde
Character Alias: The Wandering Grove
Character Race: Outlander
Character Age:  Ralox is roughly twenty, and Verde is 2 (but is a fragment of an ancient tree).
Character Gender: Both don’t have any identifiable gender, but both have he/him pronouns.
Character Family: N/A
Character Magic: Wild, innate

The Finer Details:
Personality: Ralox is a tireless wanderer, constantly wandering the world in search of knowledge and a cure. Before his transformation, he was boisterous and confident to the point of cockiness, but since his recent transformation, he has become much more introspective and stoic. This is due not only to the natural tendencies of the earth he now inhabits, but also because he realized the extent of his hubris. He seeks to atone for his previous sins and grow as a person; to him, his journey is as much about his own personal growth as it is to seek a way to regain his human form. It is still a learning process for him, but his desire for self-improvement is very real.

As one might expect from a Wild mage, Ralox is very in tune with the forces of nature. Whereas many magic users might focus on ferocious and wild animals, however, Ralox’s focus is in the longer term. His affinity for long-lived and hardy beings is extremely high, especially now that his body ages even slower than them. Trees, especially, react powerfully to his presence, sensing a kindred spirit in more than one ways. He treats all of his natural allies as though they were family, assisting and defending them whenever he can. Since his transformation and subsequent banishment, he has even come to prefer the company of trees to most other races; they never react negatively to his strange appearance.

Verde is a fragment of a large tree whose roots and essence are intertwined with Ralox’s stony body. It has sentience of a kind, but it is only truly recognizable to Wild mages; most simply see it as a primal force within Ralox. Verde, however, cares not what others think. He is an ancient existence, formerly a part of a massive and ancient tree, and he knows that his knowledge and power are both immense. Compared to Ralox, he is an energetic existence, eager to protect nature and constantly crusading against those that would harm it. His bond to Ralox serves more as an irritation to the tree spirit, since the earthen druid is not nearly as quick to jump to violence as the tree spirit is. Still, the two get along fairly well, working in tandem to balance each other out and protecting the nature in Aseutoria.

History: Hubris is the downfall of many a man. Such is the tale of Ralox. From birth, he had an extreme affinity for the natural world, showing patience and understanding far beyond his years as he grew. Even for his small Outland island of Wild mages, his power was far greater than normal. He was hailed as a prodigy as he grew up, as the one who would finally harness the power of the island’s massive central tree, Axdrassil. So spoiled and complimented was Ralox that he began to believe himself strong enough to rule the world; all he had to do was reach out and take what he had been told was his birthright.

It was this mindset that caused Ralox’s failure. So great grew his confidence that he determined that he would be able to tame Axdrassil more than a decade earlier than the elders had prepared him for. At the age of eighteen, he approached the ancient and powerful tree and assaulted it, attempting to gain its power and cooperation through force. Axdrassil, however, was an ancient and powerful tree that had survived much worse. Ralox was thrashed, nearly obliterated in both mind and soul, then buried beneath the earth by Axdrassil’s massive roots to become part of the earth.

There Ralox sat for two years, enduring immense suffering. The only reason he didn’t break was because of his small triumph. He had shaved off a small piece of Axdrassil, into which he poured all his willpower and mind into. Having been forced to use his abilities to merge with the earth and avoid suffocating, the small shard’s power was the only thing that kept Ralox from losing his sense of self to the earth. Over time, the shard gained its own sentience, becoming Verde; with the tree spirit’s company, Ralox persevered.

Eventually, he had gained enough power to make their escape. Taking Verde into his shell of earth, Ralox escaped the grasp of Axdrassil, emerging in the far off land of Aseutoria. Using the power of Verde and his own remnants of power, he crafted himself a humanoid form out of earth, with Verde at its core to allow him to move autonomously. Ralox resolved to not return to his island until he had atoned for his hubris. Together with Verde, he would travel this new land, redeem himself, and return to the island not as Axdrassil’s enemy, but as a friend.

Appearance:
Appearance:
While Ralox had been fairly attractive before his defeat, that is in the past. The Ralox of now is a rocky, inhuman golem crafted from stone. Verde grows within him, the tree’s innate power lighting him up and providing him with the green energy that seeps through the cracks of his craggy exterior. He is tall and burly, standing at roughly 6’6 and having broad shoulders. His eyes glow green, the power of Verde suffusing his entire being. The massive rocky pillar he carries around is as much a part of him as the rest of him is, brimming with natural energy to blast away any who would threaten the natural world.

Being a being made of rock now, Ralox has no true need for trappings and clothing, but he prefers to wear some; it helps him feel closer to his lost humanity. A pair of plain leather pants that Ralox hunted and crafted himself adorn his body. A massive belt with a stunning emerald in the center holds the pants up, the emerald having been found during his imprisonment beneath the earth. Various talismans of his own make adorn his body, as much to hide his freak presence as it is to protect him from outside threats.
